RED WINGS (24-19-11) at CAPITALS (24-22-9)
The Red Wings travel to Verizon Center in Washington to complete the Capitals and Red Wings home-to-home series on Super Bowl Sunday! The Capitals lost to the Red Wings in an exciting 4-3 S/O decision. The Capitals look to rebound today in Washington with help from their home crowd who they haven’t entertained for 7 straight games. This is the third and final meeting between these conference rivals. Each team has a win in hand against one another.
The Red Wings are Detroit 5-4-1 and are starting to climb their way into the playoff picture. The Red Wings are just one point out of the 8th playoff spot in the eastern conference. A win over the Capitals today in regulation or overtime would leap from them from 10th to 8th in the eastern conference. Henrik Zetterberg and Jimmy Howard both returned to the lineup Friday night against the Capitals. Pavel Datsyuk is still labeled as injured with a lower body injury and won’t start against the Capitals on Sunday.
The Capitals are only three points out of a playoff spot, but if they want to get closer the Capitals must get a regulation win over the Red Wings. Washington is Washington 2-6-2 and continue to struggle on defense. In the last three games the Capitals have allowed at least three goals in each game. The Capitals will look to rebound against the Devils after losing to them on Friday. Michael Neuvirth will start for the Capitals. Defensemen Mike Green and forward Brooks Laich are game time decisions for today’s game!
