The Road To Gold; Five Capitals Head To Sochi.

The Olympic break is here! All NHL teams are off for about a week and a half due to the Olympic games! The Washington Capitals have sent five of their players to Sochi to compete in the games! We will follow all five athletes as they start their journey to Olympic gold.

Alexander Ovechkin will be playing for team Russia. Ovechkin heads into the Olympic break leading the league in goals scored with 40. Ovechkin will be playing in his third Olympic games. He has yet to medal in any of them. Ovechkin will be paired with good friend Evgeni Malkin on the top line, with them they will be accompanied by center Pavel Datsyuk. Russia will be in group A along side Slovenia, Slovakia, and the United States.  Russia will take on Slovenia on February 13th at 7:30 am EST.

John Carlson Will be playing for team USA. This is John Carlson’s first Olympic Games. Carlson heads into the break with 10 goals scored as a blue liner, the most he’s ever had in a single season. Carlson will make his Olympic debut on February 13th against Slovakia, will he will take on Zdeno Chara and Marian Hossa. USA is in group A along with the Russians, Slovakia, and Slovenia.

Marcus Johansson  will be playing for team Sweden, his first olympic games. Johansson was just barely selected for team Sweden. When Henrik Sedin pulled out days before the Olympics started with a rib injury, Marcus was asked to join the team. Johansson heads into the break with 29 assists, three fewer then his career best in a single season. Johansson will make his Olympic debut February 13th against Czech Republic, will he will take on teammate Martin Erat. Sweden is in group C alongside Czech Republic, Latvia, and Switzerland.

Nicklas Backstrom will be on team Sweden alongside teammate Marcus Johansson. Backstrom is gearing up for his second Olympic games. Backstrom is having a fantastic season. Backstrom is currently 3rd in assists with 45, and 15th in overall points with 56. The precision passer will be looking for his first gold medal of his career. He will take on the Czechs on February 13th alongside MoJo. Sweden is in group C alongside the Czech Republic, Latvia, and Switzerland.

Martin Erat. Like Johansson Erat was a fill in. Erat was selected to join the Czech Republic after Vladimir Sobotka had to step down. Erat heads into the break with no monkey on his back. Martin netted his first goal of this season against the Devils in a 3-0 win. Martin will be alongside hall of famer Jaromir Jagr. He will take on Sweden and his two teammates Marcus and Nicklas on February 13th. He also in in group C alongside the Swedes, Latvia, and Switzerland.
