USA was looking to stay hot after an epic win over the Russians the day before. USA beat Russia in a 3-2 S/Oshie win. T.J Oshie scored 4 goals in the shootout. USA was looking to stay undefeated in the prelims, with a win they would win group A with a perfect record of 3-1-0-0, and also get a bye into the playoffs. Slovenia entered the game also looking to get a bye in the playoffs. Slovenia could win group A with a regulation win over the United states. (Thank you @Mshaffer for the featured image!)
USA started fast, like they’ve done all Olympics. Phil the thrill got on the board first for USA just a minute into the game. A sweet toe drag past a Slovenia defender and a simple shot past the goaltender left USA with a 1-0 lead. But Phil Kessel wasn’t done just yet. Just two minuets after his last goal he found the twine again. An amazing back door goal by Kessel gave USA a 2-0 lead. Slovenia started to tilt the ice in the second half of the stanza. Out shooting and out hitting USA gave Slovenia multiple chances that were denied by a sharp Ryan Miller. The 1st ended with USA on top 2-0
USA started the 2nd taking a goalie interference penalty by David Backes. The Slovenians pressured the Americans in the offensive zone for an impressive 1:35 on the power play, but only had one shot on net. After an odd man rush by the Americans one of the Slovenian defenders threw TJ Oshie down on the ice. (Why you do that!?!) Giving team USA a chance at the power play. With stellar penalty killing by the Slovenians team USA didn’t even record a shot on net. A few minuets later USA pressured the Slovenians in the offensive zone for a billjillion hours which lead to another tap in-goal by Phil Kessel, which gave him the natural hat trick. But USA wasn’t done scoring just yet, “When it rains it poors“, a billjillion more hours of offensive zone time for USA gave Ryan McDonagh his chance, and he didn’t miss. With the top shelf goal by the Ranger forward USA now led the Slovenians 4-0. The period ended pretty uneventful for the final five minuets. USA headed into the 3rd leading the Slovenians 4-0.
Since we started each other paragraph talking about USA we decided to switch it up. Slovenia entered the 3rd period pretty much knowing they were going to lose. Not enough skill and completely mis-matched left the Slovenians fighting for one thing, not to be shut out by miller. USA continued to play their game. Just three minuets into the third USA all but sealed it up. A David Backes soccer like goal gave USA a 5-0 lead. As the game was coming to an end Slovenia found the back of the net ending the shutout bid for Ryan Miller with 17.6 seconds left. USA would ultimately win the game with a final of 5-1. With the win USA wins group A with a final record of 3-1-0-0 and get a first round bye.
