The Sochi Olympics are starting to get real serious in the hockey world. As the preliminary round came to an end today and the elimination games starting on Tuesday we decided to give you our three stars of the preliminary round.

#3 Jonas Hiller

With all the attention on USA, Russia, and Canada it’s easy to forget about the dangerous Switzerland team. Jonas Hiller only allowed one goal in the three games he played. Daniel Alfredsson, Sweden, was the only player to record a goal against the Swiss goalie. Jonas Hiller recorded two shutouts this week against the Czech Republic and Latvia.

#2 Phil “The Thrill” Kessel

Kessel continued his brilliant play for team USA on Sunday with a natural hat-trick in a 5-1 USA win over Slovenia. Kessel currently leads the Olympics in points with seven, four goals and three assists. Kessel helped propel team USA to an impressive 3-1-0-0  preliminary record, giving his team a bye on Tuesday.

#1 OSHIE OSHIE OSHIE

TJ Oshie is the man of the week. He easily grabs our number one star of the preliminary rounds, not only for what he did on the ice but what he said off the ice. TJ Oshie and team USA were deadlock with the Russians after 65 minuets and three shootout shooters. It was time for extra innings. International rules allow a team to re-use a player in a shootout as many times as you want. Dan Bylsma took complete advantage of that. He allowed TJ Oshie to shoot six times in the shootout. Oshie made an impress 4/6 and notched the game winning shootout goal against the Russian team. After his impressive performance TJ Oshie was later refereed to as an American Hero by the media, he responded “I’m no American Hero, the true hero’s are wearing camo”  And that’s why TJ Oshie get’s our number one star.
