The Capitals pressured the Ducklings real fast real early. Just 2:11 into the first Joel Ward picked up a juicy rebound and went top shelf. Wardo’s 21st goal of the season gave the Capitals an important 1-0 lead on the road. The Ducks responded fast just 61 seconds after Joel Wards’ goal Ben Lovejoy tallied for the Ducks. The game was tied back up at 1-1.
As the period was coming to an end the Capitals were sent to the man advantage. With 10 seconds remaining in the period Troy Brouwer tucked in his 21st of the season, which was assisted by both Marcus Johansson and Nicklas Backstrom. The Capitals ended the first with a crucial 2-1 lead.
The second period started with the Capitals taking a bad penalty. During the kill Troy Brouwer sent the puck over the glass to give the Ducks a 2-man advantage. The Ducks kept the puck in the Capitals zone on the 5-on-3 for almost a full two minuets. Despite the strong puck possession the Ducks couldn’t convert. Midway through the second Capitals defensemen Mike Green was called for a hooking penalty. The Ducks were sent to their 3rd power play of the night trailing the Caps by one. The Capitals would kill off the third power play of the night to keep their 2-1 lead. With just 30 seconds remaining in the 2nd stanza the Capitals would be penalized for the the fourth time of the period. The ducks wouldn’t score in the 2nd period but would start the third with the 1:30 remaining in the man advantage.
The Ducks started the third with time left on the man advantage. This time the Ducks would prevail successful
But the game wouldn’t stay tied for very long. Alexander Ovechkin would score his 46th goal of the season on the man advantage. The goal would give the Capitals the lead back with 17:30 left to play.
At the 11:20 mark of the third the Ducks would be sent to the man advantage for the 5th time of the game. But for the fourth time of the night the Capitals would kill of the penalty. The power plays continued to come, this time the Capitals were the benefactors. The Capitals were headed to their 3rd power play of the night, looking for an insurance goal with 8:00 left in the game. The Ducks would kill their first power play of the night to keep the Caps lead at one.
